Whipped Body Butter: What Is In It and How to Use It

Body Butter

Body butter is the richer cousin of lotion. Lotion is mostly water. Body butter is made from butters, waxes and oils, so a little goes a long way and it stays on your skin longer. Ours is whipped, which makes it light and easy to spread. Here is what is in the jar and how to get the most from it.

What is in our body butter

The ingredient list is short, and every item has a job.

  • Organic shea butter is the base. It is a plant butter prized for being rich and softening.
  • Organic beeswax gives the butter body and leaves a light layer on the skin that helps hold moisture in.
  • Organic jojoba oil is technically a liquid wax. It feels close to the skin’s own oils, so it sinks in well.
  • Organic sunflower oil and castor oil add glide and a soft sheen.
  • Vitamin E oil helps keep the oils fresh.
  • Potato starch cuts the greasy feel, so the butter dries down soft instead of slick.

Scented jars also have a pair of essential oils. The unscented jar stops at the list above.

How to use it

The best time is right after a shower, while your skin is still a little damp. Scoop a pea sized amount, warm it between your palms, and press it in. Start small. You can always add more.

Spend extra time on the spots that dry out first: elbows, knees, heels and hands. Give it a minute to settle before you get dressed.

Choose a scent

  • Rose Earth: rose geranium and patchouli. Floral with an earthy base.
  • Cozy Calm: Roman chamomile and frankincense. Soft and mellow, nice before bed.
  • Sweet Bloom: sweet orange and neroli. Bright and citrusy.
  • Unscented: no essential oils at all.

Choose a size

It comes in 2 oz, 3 oz and 4 oz jars. The 2 oz jar is a good way to try a scent or to keep in a bag. If you plan to use it every day, the 4 oz jar is the one to get.

Good to know

Natural butters soften in the heat and firm up in the cold. Keep the jar somewhere cool and out of direct sun. If your skin is very sensitive, start with the unscented jar and try a small patch first. The butter contains beeswax, so it is not vegan.
